Religion and the President – Short Term Memory of Conservative America

Posted by politicalmonkey2010 on August 22, 2010

An Iconic "Christian Conservative" who rarely went to church.

We’ve all heard the polls that says 18% of Americans believe Pres. Obama is a Muslim.  How? This is absolutely mind boggling, I am assuming it is this same group of people who also think he was not born in the US?

Or perhaps the right-wing nut  nut jobs like Rush Limbaugh “There might be reasons why some people think” Obama is a Muslim. On his August 19 radio show, Rush Limbaugh, who lately has taken to calling Obama “Imam Obama“, said: “Has Obama ever called Muslims ‘bitter clingers’? Well, he’s called Christians ‘bitter clingers.’ He did that in San Francisco. I’m just throwing these things out here, folks, because people are questioning his Christianity. Some think he’s a Muslim. I’m just saying there might be reasons why some people think this.” Limbaugh also said during the same show, “If it was OK, and even laudatory, to call Bill Clinton America’s first black president, why can’t we call Imam Obama America’s first Muslim president?”

Or perhaps, Pamela Geller of Atlas’ Shrugs  may be playing a part.  (Keep in mind this is in fact the very individual who started the No Mosque at Ground Zero), one has to wonder what her agenda may be.  In a May 18 post, Geller wrote of Obama’s comments on the signing of the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act: “The Daniel Pearl beheading ‘captured the world’s imagination’ — spoken like an ……….antisemitic Muslim terrorist. Pearl was beheaded  because of Islamic anti-semitism and violent jihadi doctrine. Freedom of the press had nothing to do with it. And this coming from a plant who is attempting to restrict these freedoms …………..press and speech.” In fact, Obama was honoring Pearl in his comments.

Geller’s blog contains 267 posts tagged, “Muslim in the White House?” In a June 2, 2009, post, Geller called Obama “The Muslim president.” Calling it a “critical issue,” Geller wrote in January 2008 that “Obama went to a madrassa in Jakarta,” that “he practiced Islam,” and that “if Obama makes it to the big house, Israel is screwed. Finished.” On May 30, 2009, Geller wrote that with his Cairo speech, Obama “proved everything I said to be true.” In fact, CNN debunked the “madrassa” falsehood in January of 2007, and as Newsweek stated, “Barack Obama has never been Muslim and never practiced Islam.”

The of course there is Fox news and Glenn Beck – Beck on Obama: “I think he is a Christian that Christians don’t recognize.” On his August 19 radio show, Glenn Beck addressed the findings of the Time poll, saying, “Here’s the problem with this. I find that a disturbing poll because I don’t think — I think that is the easy answer for people who are like, ‘Well, it doesn’t make sense. Nothing makes sense.’ And I think the easy thing is to say, ‘I think he’s a Muslim.’ I don’t — I really don’t. I think he is a Christian that Christians don’t recognize.” Beck went on to claim that because “social justice activists” in the media have so distorted Christianity, “no one is explaining why Barack Obama doesn’t feel right.” Beck also used the fact that Obama attended Wright’s church to further confuse the issue, saying of Obama: “When he did get Jesus, he got it from Jeremiah Wright. This is liberation theology. … So the story of Jesus takes on a whole different light.”

There is a whole list of other right wing nut jobs you can read about here http://mediamatters.org/research/201008190061

If you rule out the other theories, the one that is left is race.  Like it or not, no matter how uncomfortable it makes us that is what is left.  I have to agree with the following: To understand why the myth of Obama’s Muslim identity not only persists, but grows, one must view it as commentary on his perceived “otherness.” As a black male, Obama belongs to what is arguably – from a historical perspective – the most reviled and oppressed group in our society. Moreover, he carries a foreign, even Muslim-sounding name. But explicit racism is no longer in vogue in mainstream America. These polls show that people are circumventing the taboo by using Islam as a proxy for race….

The Muslim male, as he exists in America’s collective psyche, is today’s ultimate “other,” a menacing adversary with whom we are locked in existential struggle. What could be decried as hateful if directed at other communities is common currency today for politicians and pundits commenting on Islam. Islamophobia remains socially acceptable where other forms of bigotry have been suppressed.

For those who continue to feel estranged from a President who is not white, labeling Obama as Muslim is the sole available substitute for racial epithets that are no longer tolerated. Where they appear to take issue with prayer, those polled are really fixated with pigmentation.

This was from an article written by Ramzi Kassem in the NY Daily news.  Who is Ramzi? Ramzi Kassem is Assistant Professor of Law and directs the Immigrant and Refugee Rights Clinic. With his students, Professor Kassem has represented prisoners of various nationalities presently or formerly held at American military facilities at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, and at other detention sites worldwide.

Pres. Obama is being criticized for not attending church on a regular basis.  Yet, that iconic, beloved  Conservative Pres. Ronald Reagan RARELY attended church while in the White House, and rarely invited a chaplain in to give services.   We forget  he was a divorced and remarried man who, as governor of California, had signed into law the most liberal abortion bill in the nation, won the support of the Religious Right in 1980 and again in 1984.  President Reagan did defend religion against those who sought to purge it from public life, but he hardly wished to see Americans submit themselves to an church driven  establishment.

Things are getting crazy. My knee-jerk reaction when I hear that people think “Obama is a Muslim” is to scream “No he’s NOT!”. But then when I think about it, why is being called a Muslim derogatory? What if he was a Muslim? Should that even matter? Is that not allowed? It really shouldn’t be any different than somebody saying “Obama may claim to like hamburgers, but I think he secretly likes hot dogs more!” It should be irrelevant.

    • Agreed, it should be absolutely of no consequence. Which is why you are almost forced to believe the “Muslim issue” is really just a cover for the fact that this is a black man, and while we are supposed to be “emotionally and spiritually evolved” and it is not politically correct, not to mention morally bankrupt to be a racist this is a racists reaction. Either way it is appalling.
