Jan Brewer - Who needs the Constitution?

All the talk of a fragile economy, government austerity, wasting tax payers money has evidently not had an impact in Arizona.  Under the leadership of Gov. Brewer the state is now facing more court battles, more tax payer money being spent to what amounts to a very expensive campaign financed by each and every US taxpayer.  So weather you like it or not, you are contributing to Jan Brewer’s campaign, all so she can get the soundbite that says – we’re doing what the Federal government won’t…or some variation there of.

Here are the facts:

  • Under the Obama admnistration a record numbers of illegal immigrants and auditing hundreds of businesses that  hire undocumented workers.
  • The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency expects to deport about 400,000 people this fiscal year, nearly 10 percent above the Bush administration’s 2008 total and 25 percent more than were deported in 2007. The pace of company audits has roughly quadrupled since President George W. Bush’ss final year in office.
  • Secure Communities is another program that uses the fingerprints of people in custody for other reasons to identify deportable immigrants. The administration has expanded the system to 437 jails and prisons from 14 and aims to extend it to “every law enforcement jurisdiction” by 2013.   ICE director John Morton predicts it will “overhaul the face of immigration.”
  • Nearly 50 percent of the people who have been deported from the United States this budget year have a criminal conviction, from driving without a license and DUI to major felonies, ICE’s Morton said. That represents an increase of more than 36,000 over the same period in 2009, which showed a rise of 22,000 over 2008
  • The program does not focus on illegal immigrants who  are pregnant, nursing or seriously ill. Also included are primary caretakers of children or the infirm and people.  These people should not be placed in detention except in “extraordinary circumstances.”

The facts are quite simple, we do not have the system, man power, or ability to round up each and every illegal alien, we need to prioritize.   God forbid we should use some sense of compassion and not round up pregnant women, or primary caretakers!

What amazes, and it has for the past four years to be honest, is this idea that if you say something enough it must be true.  This harping that the Federal Gov’t doesn’t do its job, yet the facts are out there and they are ignored.  Somebody left a comment on another post and it said:

Govenor, thank you for fighting for us, it seems we have laws but the goverment does not inforce them.

What part of illegal does this Judge not understand?

She should be ashamed to all of the people for her ruling.

I’m ashamed for her.

Ruth, the issue at play is really does Federal Law beat state law.  Your Gov. is using this as a political play, it has nothing to do with what is best for Arizona or the country, it is bowing to the populist ideas.    We all agree that a major overhaul needs to be done, there is a problem with illegal aliens.  Nobody is going to argue that point.  What that means then is that people need to come to the table with ideas that fit within the Constitutional Framework of our country.  Sounds reasonable right?  But that doesn’t make for a good sound bite does it?  It doesn’t feed the anger of of racism, it doesn’t soothe the need for blood… as somebody once said..it is easy to lead a revolution, but harder to govern.  Populist view does not always agree with the Constitution and I for one am not willing to throw out the Constitution.

Ruth, you think warrantless arrests of anyone who looks like they might be here illegally is constitutional? That’s one of the provisions you’re blasting Judge Bolton for stopping.
Republicans in Arizona only started this mess to take the voters minds off the fact that their state was fiscally crumbling.
Also, the Secure Communities program has been quite successful – that’s why no one has heard about it.
