The Great State Seal of Arizona –  Ditat Deus, “God Enriches”

God may in fact enrich, but the State of Arizona would like to “enrich” education by way of revising it or eliminating those parts which might make us a wee bit uncomfy…

I am wondering if Arizona holds the market for “special needs” politicians.  Seriously.

Right on the heels of this controversial immigration bill, Gov. Brewer approved another little ditty…without public statement.  Gee does that surprise anybody?

The new law forbids elementary or secondary schools to teach classes that are “designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group” and advocate “the overthrow of the United States government” or “resentment toward a race or class of people.”  The new law states that students “should be taught to treat and value each other as individuals and not be taught to resent or hate other races or classes of people…

On the surface that sounds like a nice thing, to value each other as individuals and not to hate, but the real question is where was this idea when the original immigration bill was signed into law?   And should we not be teaching the full discourse of race in the school system to each and every person?   Race is a valid subject.  Understanding where one came from is a valid pursuit, understanding history is a noble endevour.

It seems that this bill was aimed at  Tuscon Unified School.  There is a  14-year-old program offers courses in standard topics like literature and history, but with an emphasis on Latino authors or history. It also has specialized courses with African-American and Native American emphasis.
Sean Arce, who runs the Tucson program, said that students do better in school when presented with material that includes people who look like them.  That makes perfect sense to me.  Marketing people understand that if you can identify on a personal level with a product, you will support it.  Kids get it, if you were a black girl would you want a white barbie doll?  It is not different for education, tell me about me!

Mmmm, so we don’t want you to learn about your race in a country of immigrants?  White bread is not a race by the way

The bill was pushed by state school Superintendent Tom Horne, who has spent two years trying to get Tucson schools to drop a Mexican-American studies program he said teaches Latino students they are an oppressed minority.  He also told the AP that the program teaches Latino students that they are oppressed by white people. “It’s just like the old South, and it’s long past time that we prohibited it” .  So we should prohibit the truth from history because it might make us uncomfortable?  America is a country built by and for oppressed people – did somebody miss that history lesson?
But wait!!!! Here’s the kicker, Tom Horne is running for …drum roll please….Attorney General.  You can see is campaign page touting his conservative beliefs at http://www.electtomhorne.com/  Don’t forget to check out the “Tom Tv” section of the site.  God help us.

Isn’t it nice to know that in hard economic times the state of Arizona evidently has an excess of funds available to sign into law acts that provide a launching pad for politicians and political wannabes?

Great segment on Anderson Cooper 360 – unfortunately I am having difficulty embedding it..here’s the link http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/05/12/arizona.ethnic.studies/index.html?eref=rss_politics&iref=polticker
