Health Reform: An Open Letter to the Republican Party or Game Over

Posted by politicalmonkey2010 on March 22, 2010

Never before in the history of the United States have we been able to see exactly what is or is not done in making a bill a law, and I must say I am grateful for the view.

The theatrics of John Boehner was well scripted, he played the role with a great deal of conviction and passion.  But it does not change what his performance was – a performance.  An attempt to secure sound bites, video feed for future campaigns.   I resent the fact that Mr. Boehner invoked the spirit of such great men as Thomas Jefferson in his act.  Does it not strike anybody in the Republican party as odd that you have spent at least a year and a half in session, at the expense of the tax payers,  and when it comes to one of the most historic bills ever to be passed you were not at the table to craft it?

I understand marketing,  and now your product, the Republican Party has to spin this event.  There are two emotions that all human beings operate on:  Fear and Greed.  We have seen the campaign of fear for the past year, the spread of dis-information ranging from “a government take over of health care” to this will “pull the plug on granny”.  The rhetoric is endless on the fear mongering, and it is rhetoric, it is spin.  You have given seed to so many radical conspiracy theories ranging from this is socialism to this will crash the US dollar and kill capitalism.   You are creating a monster that you will not be able to control.  You have failed to argue the facts and have resorted to hysteria  and grandstanding as so well illustrated by Republican Joe Wilson yelling out “you lie!” to the most recent display of drama by yelling “baby killer”  at Rep. Bart Stupak.  You have cherry picked this bill instead of working to write it, nobody ever believed this bill was going to be perfect out of the gate.  But there had to be a start, some innovation, and the Republican party clearly demonstrated they are not starters, nor are they  innovators.  When you were granted concessions like tort reform, in fact over 200 amendments were “Republican” sponsored, yet none of you had the internal fortitude to vote for it.  You have painted yourselves into a political corner,  you cannot admit now that maybe, just maybe this isn’t so bad…because then the obvious question is  why didn’t you vote for it?  Instead you opted for theatrics utilizing the media of Conservative talkers on Fox and talk radio to whip the Republican voting base into such a frenzy that you have discredited yourselves.

This is not about you Mr. or Mrs. Republican Politician, this is about the American people, not about how you are going to secure another term in office let alone a majority.   How dare you say that your constituents do not want this bill?  Do you think that the elderly want to re-open the “doughnut hole” and charge seniors more for prescription drugs?  Do you think you will be supported when you ask to re-allow insurers to rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition?  How many votes will you get when you try to banish 25 year olds from their parents’ insurance coverage?

Of all the topics you could have picked to stand against, this was not one.  Health care is personal, and it is even more personal when you don’t have it, when you can’t afford, or when you are denied coverage because of a pre-existing condition.  You wanted to start over?  Do you think people who are on the edge of financial ruin can wait for you to start over?  Do you think somebody needing medical care today can wait until it is the politically “right” time for the Republican party?

So where do you go from here?  Do you continue to whip up the frenzy based on mis-information, distortion of facts?  Do you continue to divide the country?  Prepare for coming elections instead of worry about actually doing something now?  Do you continue to reduce the dignity of our government for your own political perversion?

Or do you finally own it?  Do you come forward and admit, we failed the American people because we behaved like a bunch of children?  The excuse of we weren’t allowed at the table is not valid, it is your job to be at the table!  This is not a school yard, this is the political machinery of the United States of America.  You are in Washington, you were elected, you had the responsibility to  come to the table, invited or not.  But you agenda was already set wasn’t it?  Starting with Jim DeMint,  Republican of South Carolina saying… “If we’re able to stop Obama on this, it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.”  Your agenda had nothing to do with the American people or their needs, it had everything to do with politics, taking down a President.

The American public is not stupid, we have seen with our own eyes.

Shame on you all.
